Description
Montipora, from the Acroporidae family, are the second-largest genus of corals with over 200 species. They are a small polyped stony coral with uniquely tiny polyps and corallites that give many of them a fuzzy, velvety look. Montipora coral’s hardiness makes it the best SPS coral for beginners and experienced reef keepers alike. Although hardy in some ways, Montipora are usually mild mannered and if they are crowded by other corals or algae they will be on the losing end, so be sure to give them space!
Spongodes are a Montipora with unusual growth formations. These corals have plate-like bases that encrust upwards and outwards to grow both plates and branches. In addition to their unique formations, and similar to other Montis, spongodes appear to be covered in a blanket of velvet due to their tiny and uniform polyps. These corals will benefit from additional fine food fed weekly such as zooplankton and other tiny planktons. With hues of pink, cream, and green, these peaceful corals will be an entrancing addition to any mature tank.
