What should I use for a holdfast, or "hitching post"?

Use artificial plants, plastic chains, pieces of rock and coral, as holdfasts or hitching posts for your seahorse to hold onto when resting or moving about the aquarium.

Seahorses are not very strong swimmers so the hitching posts should be positioned throughout the aquarium.  Because seahorses often change their color to match their environment, we recommend providing bright yellow or orange hitching posts.

When selecting your hitching posts, make sure there aren’t areas where the seahorse can get stuck.  Also avoid décor with sharp edges as it can irritate seahorses and result in infections.

Live plants, such as caulerpa, also make excellent holdfasts.
