What should I feed my seahorses?

Feed your seahorses frozen mysis shrimp, a shrimp-like crustacean, as their staple daily food source (all NoCoast Aquatics captive bred seahorses have been trained to eat frozen mysis shrimp).  Also supplement their diet, if possible, with a variety of other food to provide a more balanced diet.

More information on frozen mysis shrimp:

Frozen mysis shrimp is the best source of essential nutrients for seahorses available.  There are many good brands of frozen mysis - we use PE (Piscine Energetics) Mysis but other brands are fine to use as long as they are Canadian freshwater mysis.  Mysis shrimp can typically be purchased at your local fish store and is also available online.

Mysis shrimp is packaged in individual cubes or in flat packs that can be broken into smaller sections.  The jumbo size of mysis shrimp available through Hikari is too large for our seahorses so select a smaller mysis shrimp size.

Mysis shrimp has been flash frozen after harvesting.  It is important to purchase packages that haven’t expired or thawed to ensure the food is still of high quality.  Online purchases should be delivered in overnight or two day delivery with proper packaging to make sure the mysis shrimp remains frozen.

More information on supplemental frozen food:

A variety of food sources is helpful to provide seahorses with a balanced diet.  Although there are many options you can try, we typically supplement daily frozen mysis shrimp feedings with frozen spirulina brine shrimp and live enriched brine shrimp.

Artemia, or brine shrimp, on their own, do not offer much nutritional value so shouldn't be used as a primary food source.  It is recommended to feed only as an additional source of food.  More information:

  • Frozen Spirulina Brine Shrimp – These brine shrimp are fed a spirulina algae formula for enrichment of vitamins, carotenoids and minerals. We feed Hikari frozen brand available at local fish stores and online.
  • Live Enriched Brine Shrimp – You can purchase or grow your own brine shrimp and then gut-load them with many different enrichment products.  We feed the adult brine enrichments such as SELCO, AlgaMac 3050, Spirulina Algae Powder and Paracoccus Bacteria Powder prior to feeding the seahorses. These enrichments are available for purchase in the Food & Enrichment section of our store.
