Hippocampus reidi, from the Syngnathidae family, can be found throughout the Caribbean Sea and the Western North Atlantic Ocean. These yellowish seahorses have a narrow, smooth body with a long, thick snout, giving them the name “Longsnout”. Hippocampus reidi can grow quite thin and long, up to 7 inches, and can be distinguished by their rounded coronet.
These captive-bred Hippocampus reidi are a light yellow-gold color with distinct black markings surrounding their eyes. These seahorses are social animals and will do great in reef tanks with live coral, but prefer a species-only tank as they are peaceful and slow moving animals. Seahorses change their body color based on their surroundings, so be sure to stick with bright yellow, orange and blue decorations. With a pristine tank, enough fresh or frozen mysis shrimp, and the proper care, these seahorses will thrive!
